Do I resign or not?

14 November 2008

Now might not be the best time to resign, but for those who are willing to take this step, here are some tips on how to tell your boss.

  • Find out what is the best time to speak to your boss, avoid Monday mornings or Friday afternoons as these are normally very busy times for any manager.
  • Ensure you have thought through any questions that might be asked, and be honest in your reply for leaving your jobs, even if it to go to a competitor.
  • Unless the departure is for unusual reasons stay positive and professional in your approach.
  • Allow enough time to discuss your departure, don't do it at 1 minute to 5pm.
  • Do not resign if you intend to change your mind, it sets a bet tone for your ongoing tenure.
  • Don’t forget to breathe!
  • End on an optimistic note, perhaps wishing them well for the future or reminding them of your willingness to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Make your last impression a good one.
